Family Developmet Institute

Because students are more likely to succeed in school when their parents are involved with the educational process, the Family Development Institute offers seminars for parents/guardians or advocates of LEI scholars. Topics are developed with input from parents, staff and teachers, and have included adolescent/child development, effective communication, creating a positive learning environment in the home, fostering educational success and conflict resolution, in addition to issues of special concern to parents of seniors, such as the college application process and financial aid.

For scholars to be eligible for scholarships, their parents must commit to attending 80 percent of these seminars, which meet on the local high school for four hours on Saturday mornings about 12 times a year. If parents are unable to attend due to work or other obligations, they may send an advocate – such as an aunt or uncle, grandparent, godparent, adult sibling, neighbor or friend who is involved with the child.

As part of the Family Development Institute, parents elect a leadership committee that meets bimonthly to coordinate communication with the group at-large. lei parents also participate in field trips as well as in fundraising activities

Career Planning Services

Individual career counseling, resume and cover letter development, interview training, and job search assistance. In addition, the company offers career planning seminars to assist organizations with employee career development and retirement planning.

Career planning is a lifelong process, requiring continuous effort to meet changing employment conditions. To achieve and manage a satisfying career, it is crucial to identify a preferred career direction and to implement effective career enhancing strategies.

To assist clients in clarifying career direction at any life stage, The Lumiere Group offers a career counseling experience, consisting of two interviews. This process may be completed through face to face meetings for local clients or by a combination of telephone, e-mail, and video conference for distance clients and those for whom these modes would be more convenient.

The first interview, which is approximately two hours, includes a discussion of personal interests, abilities, personality characteristics, and career aspirations.

After completing an interest inventory and a values survey, clients participate in a second interview of approximately three hours. During this meeting, the interest inventory and values survey are discussed, potential career alternatives are considered, and a tentative career plan is developed.

Resume Writing and Review Service

In addition to acquiring a well-written resume, the resume development experience is designed to assist clients in gaining a better understanding of their career accomplishments. This enhanced awareness may serve to be useful in broadening career alternatives and in preparing for employment interviews.

The resume development process may involve a face to face meeting for local clients or be completed wholly by telephone and e-mail communication for distance clients and those for whom these modes would be most convenient.Resume development includes a telephone discussion of client goals, a review of an existing resume and/or work history, and further in-depth discussion regarding the client's experience, educational background, and interests.

The purpose of this approach is to construct a resume which goes beyond a series of job descriptions to differentiate the client's accomplishments from those with similar backgrounds. To support the resume, a personalized cover letter, targeting the client's area of interest, also is developed. Materials are provided in Microsoft Word format and may be supplied as laser printed copies.

While most resumes and cover letter packages are completed within approximately 5 hours of billable service time, materials for chief executive officers, senior management personnel, and some specialized fields may involve additional time
